Domestic and commercial charging points must be installed by a specialist and certified EV Charging Point Installer.

All charging point installations are carried out in accordance with government installation recommendations and the requirements of disabled people.

Focus Electrical can arrange to have any required groundworks completed for the installation of any cables needed to supply your EV charging point location.

What Is An EV Charger?

EV stands for electric vehicle and an EV charger is simply an electric vehicle charging station that can be set up at your home or business.

They supply electrical energy to enable the recharging of plug-in electric vehicles and hybrids right outside your house or in designated bays at business locations.

The same EV charger can be used for a car or a large van, which are also now on the market.

Where Will The EV Charger Be Installed?

A charging point can be installed at your office or home. Focus Electrical will install it in a really convenient place near to where you park your electric car on a day-to-day basis.

The home charging points are compact, weatherproof units that mount to a wall near an electricity supply. They can be installed in a garage or outdoors.

Office-based charging points can be installed at any practical location within the allocated car parking areas. These charging points vary in size and design.

You connect your car via a charging cable, usually supplied with the electric car but Focus Electrical also has a supply of these if you need different lengths or a duplicate cable.

Cost Of An EV Home Charger

The installation cost of an EV home or office charger will vary greatly, but having an EV charger installed will, in the long run, save time and money.

Charge the car as it sits on the driveway or in the car park whilst you continue with your daily business, this proves far more productive than waiting at a public electrical charging point.

Here is an outline of what you will be charged for when Focus Electrical installs an electric vehicle charging station:

  • Electrical Vehicle Charging Unit (EVCU).
  • Electrical components and hardware.
  • Labour costs for the installation.

In unusual circumstances, you may also incur costs for civil engineering or site works which Focus Electrical can arrange for you.

The distance between the meter and the place you would like the EV charger installed determines the length of the cables and any groundworks required.

Focus Electrical will usually find a spot that already has electricity close by, however, if this is not the case they will discuss any additional costs before they start the installation.

EVHS Government Grant

The good news is that there is a government scheme that will help homeowners with the cost called the OZEV (Office for Zero Emission Vehicles) Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS).

OZEV’s grant provides up to 75% towards the cost of an EV charger installation per vehicle. This is capped at £350 but is still a great saving.

You would pay 25% of the total invoice. Focus Electrical will then complete the paperwork and claim the rest, so you are never left out of pocket.

The requirements to qualify for an OZEV grant are that:

  • The electric or hybrid vehicle must be listed on the eligible vehicles list.
  • The driver must have designated off-road parking that they own such as a garage, driveway or private car parking space.
  • The property already exists and is not a new build.
  • You have proof that you own or have ordered a new or second-hand eligible vehicle, that an eligible vehicle has been leased for a minimum of six months or that a company car has been assigned to you for a period of at least six months.

Electrical Safety With An EVCP

Your EV charger will transfer nearly a third of the total electricity supply when charging so safety is paramount.

  • We fit a minimum of 10 metres of cable.
  • Cabling is safety checked and armoured.
  • Typically routed along your home’s exterior walls.
  • A safety cut off device is fitted by us at your consumer unit if required (if there is no space for this then a Mini Consumer Unit is installed if need be).
  • EV chargers that do not contain an O-PEN device may require the fitment of an earth rod up to 1 metre in length.

Multiple Charging Points

Focus Electrical can fit multiple charging points at your home or place of work, so do ask if you require more than one EV charger.

Workplace Charging Scheme For EV Charging Points

The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) provides grants for eligible businesses, charities and public sector organisations.

Contributions, limited to 75%, goes towards the cost of the purchase and installation of electric vehicle charge-points, up to a maximum of £350 for each socket.

Grants are provided up to a maximum of 40 points across all sites for each applicant.
