Test and Inspection

What is PAT Testing?

PAT testing stands for ‘Portable Appliance Test’ but actually the tests are for more than portable appliances.

A PAT test involves a trained electrician coming (with PAT testing equipment) to a property to carry out routine tests and visual inspections on:

  • Fixed appliances
  • Stationary appliances
  • IT appliances
  • Portable appliances
  • Cables and chargers

It is the most efficient way of discovering electrical weaknesses that appear over time. Each appliance will receive a PAT test sticker confirming (or denying) that it is safe.

Focus Electrical has professional PAT testing equipment that records testing information and enables Focus Electrical to download PAT test results.

We can provide a Condition Report, a full Homebuyers Report or a Building Survey.

PAT Testing for Homebuyers

Unbeknown to most homebuyers, Homebuyer Surveys do not check the electrics. This can leave new home owners at risk of electrical fires, high utility bills and electric shock.

To control risks and reduce danger anyone buying a new house should have the electrics tested before they move.

Owner occupiers should have their house tested every 10 years.

Landlords that let property should test every 5 years, as should any business.

PAT Testing for Businesses

UK legislation states that all businesses are responsible for the maintenance of electrical equipment and that it is kept in a safe condition.

Regular PAT testing helps to maintain standards and safeguards against damage. In the workplace PAT testing should be regulated to every 5 years.

The UK Health and Safety Executive expect businesses (including building contractors) to perform PAT testing to ensure that they are compliant with regulations, which include:

PAT testing itself is not legally required, but complying with these regulations helps to protect your business.

Not complying can result in fines of up to £5000 and sometimes imprisonment.

Commercial insurance companies will also expect that businesses follow legislation for electricity in the workplace.

PAT Testing for Building Contractors

New builds and extensions should always be PAT tested before being sold on, or used as living space.

Building contractors must meet requirements set by The UK Health and Safety Executive as outlined in PAT testing for business above.
